Amber|琥珀

As an epic novel, Amber tells a grand narrative of history from the 1920s to the present day, in which historic fragments across places from Mongolia to Europe and cultural portrayal ranging from art to philosophy are vividly explored and depicted. Through XiaoXian Mo (莫小嫻), the female protagonist’s life as a quadruple agent for the OSS (Office of Strategic Services), CIA, Soviet intelligence agencies and the intelligent services of the Chinese Communist and Nationalist Parties, the Chinese author Wenren Yueyue (聞人悅閱) crafts a sophisticated and compelling saga in which a century-long story of war, love, conspiracy, family and hope is unfolded.

Emerged from the discussions with the author, the conception of visualizing “languages” was deployed as the key approach to express the entanglement in which the protagonist’s multilingual talent as an agent, the international conflicts and the historical context are situated. Such an conception was actualized by the design of the matte gold foil stamped title “琥珀”(Traditional Chinese: Amber) intertwined with six corresponding languages: English, Arabic, German, Russian, Mongolian and French.

Underneath the book jackets, the novel’s core element of espionage is also visualized by the design of two stamps of the OSS printed across both of the volumes’ front and back covers, which indicates the transcontinental and uncertain complex where the protagonist was navigating towards a future that only can history tell.
